Par 3 Club – Texas Scramble
Team game for 3 or 4 players

Competition Rules
updated May 2024

This is a Medal (Regular Stroke Play) competition, and each team must consist of either three or four players.

To determine the team Stroke Allowance your COURSE Handicaps are used.
The percentages below are England Golf mandatory allowances:

For 4 players from lowest handicap to the highest = 25% – 20% – 15% – 10%

Example:

Player 1 = Handicap 10 X 25% = 2.5             Player 2 = Handicap 15 X 20% = 3

Player 3 = Handicap 25 X 15% = 3.75           Player 4 = Handicap 28 X 10% = 2.8

Team Stroke Allowance = 12.0 (12.05 rounded to the nearest whole number)

This is essentially a 4-player team game and therefore a 3-player team will always be somewhat disadvantaged. However, we have adopted an alternative Stroke Allowance calculation method which endeavours to make the competition as equitable as possible.

Just for the purpose of calculating the team Stroke Allowance, a 3-player team will include a Ghost Player as their fourth player. The Ghost Player’s handicap is the average handicap of the 3 players, rounded to the nearest whole number.

There is a Texas Scramble Strokes Calculator available on the Par 3 Club website (sidebar), but you must enter the handicaps in from lowest to highest to get the correct calculation. N.B. 3 Player teams MUST use the 4-player calculator and include the Ghost Player handicap.

  • A minimum of 4 tee shots per player to be used for a 4-player team
A minimum of 5 tee shots per player to be used for a 3-player team.
The remaining tee shots may be taken by any player.

Your scorecard MUST indicate which players drive has been taken on each hole.

All players tee off at each hole. Select which drive to use and mark the position (not nearer the hole). The player whose ball was chosen plays their next shot first. The other players then play from within six inches of the marked ball (not nearer the hole).

Note! Golf balls shall be placed (within 6 inches) on closely mown areas and dropped (within a club length, no nearer the hole) in all other areas.

The above method of play continues until the green is reached.
On the green a similar method applies. The ball chosen is marked a couple of inches to one side and players putt from the same spot in turn.

Note! If a player putts and just misses but then inadvertently knocks the ball into the hole, then that is the score that must count, and the other players cannot putt out to improve the score.

The score is the total number of shots from the chosen spots (including the tee shot). At the end of the round the total for each hole is added together and the stroke allowance subtracted to give the total Nett score for the round.

The team with the lowest Nett score wins (i.e. Total score minus Stroke Allowance)
Normal countback rules will apply. All Rules of Golf apply to the “Ball in Play”.
